Places and houses in Kyiv, marked (distinguished) by Pushkin’s stay

In 1820 Tzar government had deported Pushkin from Petersburg to the South because of freedom-loving poems extension. Being exiled during 4 years, great poet had visited many Ukrainian villages and cities, including Kyiv.

On January 1921 Pushkin came to Kyiv from Kamyanka town. At that time he stayed at apartment of Decembrist Vasiliy Davydov and a house of General N.Rayevskiy. Davydov’s house had not been saved till nowadays. But General Raevskiy’s house (14, Mykhailivs’ka street) was honorably marked by memorial tablet, dedicated to 150th anniversary of a people’s genius son. The sign on the tablet claims: “A great Russian poet A.S.Pushkin stayed at this house in 1821”.

During that visit he attended Kontraktova trade fair and city historical places – Shchekavitsa town (where knyaz Oleg was buried, according to the legend), Ascold grave, St. Sofia cathedral and Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra. Poet’s stay in Kyiv had found its reflection in many of his works: poems “Poltava”, “Mermaid”, poesies “Sea shore”, “Muse” and “Hussar”. Writer’s bright impressions and Kyiv themes are running through all these masterpieces.

Alexander Sergeyevich took an active role in Decembrists’ discussions about destiny of the people and political regime.

A monument of Pushkin was erected in Kyiv in 1899, on a 100th anniversary of his birthday. It’s located on Pechersk area, on the cross of Ivana Mazepy and Suvorova streets (former Nicolskaya and Suvorovskaya sreets). One of the central capital’s streets is named after the poet – Pushkinskaya. Besides, one of the biggest Kyiv parks in Shevchenkovskiy area is baring poet’s name too.
